He probably didn't live there pre the euro invasion, but I reckon the magpies were. Since the invasion, that area has probably been cleared for farming, then unfarmed for McMansion construction, Burwood Hwy construction and a few orchards here and there. My take on it is the magpies are just returning and reclaiming their places after all those disturbances.
About the only thing that's not been used to disturb their habitat would be a train line!
