I find it useful in some situations (even though my hearing is sub-standard): I can generally hear the change in sound a car's engine makes when the driver has slowed down behind you in preparation for turning left, and so I take extra care in case he does anything silly like tailgate closely, or accelerate to overtake then turn across my path, etc.
It's standard practice for me to check behind at every intersection.
Same here. Just because I didn't mention it in my previous post doesn't mean I never do it.
