Today was my first commute on my new road bike! I picked it up late Saturday, but wouldn't take it out in the rain on Sunday (too bright & shiny!). After a small ride yesterday morning (15 ks), decided that I was good enough to ride to work today on it.
I usually ride from Strathmore to North Melbourne, on my Giant Hybrid. But this morning took the new roadie, and went to my new work location in Collingwood (the office is shifting there in 2 weeks time).
It all went quite well. I don't have a speedo on the new bike, and didn't really notice how long the commute took me. My main aim was to get there safe as I feel like I should have "L" plates on at the moment. It is a big step to go from the hybrid, with front and seat suspension, upright sitting position and a mirror, to the crouched over road bike position. It will take a while to get used to looking over the right shoulder to see the traffic.
But what a ride! I seem to get so much more value from my effort - it's like driving a V8 compared to a 4 cylinder car. When I put the foot down, off she goes (well, I mightn't be at the V8 level yet, just a supercharged V6)
I still need to work out the best way to get there, think I took a wrong turn in Royal Park, but enjoyed the trip down the hill at Johnson Street - almost missed my turn off at Wellington Road.
It wasn't a super fast ride (I am super cautious at the moment), but most enjoyable.
Can't wait to see how I go tackling the Mt Alexander Rd hill on the way home.
