I have also started (after doing a few rides into the city along st kilda road) started making my intentions clear for the benefit of motorists and other cyclists. Signalling things like slowing and passing and my appreciation of the thoughtfulness of some motorists.
I also give a small wave to motorists that obey the road rules, as silly as it sounds. If they are at an intersection, and they could have cut in front of me but they wait for me, I always give them a wave and a smile.

A simple indication that he was going to turn would have let me get on my way (down to the LBS ) (There was no hill involved in this second situation )

Much braking and cursing later, we were on our way!!!!
