Firstly, I need to blow out some positives. I love my ride to work. I live in Ferntree Gully. Up on the foothills near the quarry. I work over in Mulgrave. I take nearly the full length of the Ferny Creek bike track, all the way to Stud Road, then follow the wide bike, bike-friendly footpath, (passing a LOT of stationary traffic). Its 15.5kms of bliss, then I cut through the suburbs to Wellington Road where, I find trucks, red-necks and agression.
Here come some negatives. Does anyone know of any plans to construct a separate bikepath alongside Wellington Road from Stud, to say, Police Road? With the construction of the freeway, and all its off and on ramps, about to take over the area, I havent been able to safely track through the area without ... well, y'know. Almost being blown off the seat by massive double trailer trucks and buses scooting past, inches from my right handlebar. etc etc
My trek home is always after dark so I not only have flashers and headlights, but am lit up like a Christmas tree cos frankly, the thought of some moron collecting me for kicks, (dont laugh, it happens), is not on my agenda. I'd rather be off the road completely.
I have emailed Seita, the DOI and my councillor, (for about a year), but have not had a satisfactory answer. Any thoughts?
