154 Bus lanes
(1) A driver (except the driver of a public bus) must not drive in a bus lane, unless the driver is permitted to drive in the bus lane under rule 158.

I put in a request on the Vicroads website a couple of weeks ago for 'Bicycles excepted' signs on this stretch of road (North Road Oakleigh-Clayton). I received a very positive phone call from them. They told me that a policy change to allow cyclists to ride in bus lanes generally is under consideration. This could take a few months to sort out.

In the meantime they are going to consult with the bus companies that use this road and ask their drivers to be tolerant of cyclists. They are also asking the police not to take any action.
By the way, I've not had any actual problem with bus drivers when using the bus lanes. They always give me a wide berth. On one occasion I rode in the lane to the right of the bus lane and the driver refused to overtake me on the left, implicitly acknowledging it was a dangerous place to be.
When you get used to hearing about government bureaucracy you set your expectations low, but good on Vicroads for supporting common sense and doing the right thing by all road users!
