Sounds like my preparation for last year's ATB.
12km/day commute, without fail.
A few 30-minute dirt crits.
BAD ride - 85km with small-human ballast on the back.
110km solo day ride, Beaufort to Ballarat (a long way around) in about August.
250km ATBIAD (+ ride to and fro for 273km on the day).
I used the same heart rate strategy. Set an alarm at ~70% MHR, and backed off when it beeped.
Amazing what you can get away with with half reasonable base fitness. My previous longest ride ever (nearly 2 years previous) was 160km.
I only had to pace myself though. Would have been an added degree of complication if I had to care for somebody else.
