Having ridden to Sorrento and back pretty much solo on the same day as ATBIAD, I find it curious (other than wanting to ride over the Westgate or catch a ferry) that someone would pay ANYTHING to go riding on public roads...
I'd have thought it was just expected honesty.... that I'm obviously choosing that day rather than any other to ride to Sorrento, and that I should contribute: otherwise why have that ride option at all? Although tbh it hadn't occured to me that for the other options there were reasons for needing to enrol.
Am I receiving any benefits for riding to Sorrento that day? The cars are as abusive as ever. The faster riders abuse you and the slower riders push past you at the lights for intersection after intersection, only to wobble at you menacingly as they try to clip in for 200m while you pass them. Large bunches of wonky riders scare the living heck out of you when they suddenly swing in front of you.
People contribute because they get things from the ride - support, food, water, directions, a jersey, etc, etc. I was regularly riding to Mornington and back, so I dunno, I would have to say it's a stretch to call me dishonest. The only reason I was riding solo is coz I told the group I was with to keep going after puncturing from a thumb tack - ATBIAD being the only day the dipsticks lay them all out on the road. If anything BV should be reimbursing me for a tube.
