I had an absolute ball being a vollie on this years ride so thought I would add my chain of events, views and thanks to this board.
I also invite any other vollies reading to post their experiences.
First off, in case your wondering which vollie I was today. I was the guy based at the Sorrento roundabout as Traffic Control and Ferry loading, I was carrying/wearing a bright red loudspeaker etc.
Firstly, I must say thanks to the riders, I was expecting at least a couple of complaints for the delays, I did not receive one! Everyone was extremely understanding and friendly, so thanks. I had a great chat with a few, and a few thanks from many of the riders. It really made the ride enjoyable.
The drivers on the other hand, my friend who also volunteered with me nearly got hit by cars (deliberately) twice, with one Saab driver revving his engine when he stopped around 5 - 10 cm from my friend (she didnt move to let him in where all the riders were). The contractor traffic controller would have been hit if he did not jump out the way on one occurrence. We got swore at, people speeding off, and ignoring the stop sign and upcoming traffic (on the one way, narrow road). One guy even decided to park his car in the middle of the round-a-bout blocking incoming traffic until we let him in the closed road (he didn't get in, was the one that nearly hit the contractor).
I even had someone offer to buy my loudspeaker and just tell BV it got lost.
Also, on the way home, we saw and were appalled that someone has put something sharp (looked like glass on the road) which had punctured around 40 bike tyres. The Motorcycle Marshals were on site clearing it up when we passed. These acts apparently happen every year, I even made a comment just before I left the site that it was great of no reports of this happening this year.
Good parts anyway, I didn't see any accidents happen in front or around us, everyone seemed happy, the weather held up, the queues flowed rather smoothly for the ferries and everyone seemed considerate of everyone else.
The ride seemed very organized, little went wrong throughout. A great way to see the ride run.
Anyway, once again thanks to all the riders, the BV staff (Especially Kylee and Leah who I worked with), my team and anyone else. You made the ride a great and memorable experience, and will definitely volunteer next year.
Hopefully see some familiar faces if your on the GVBR this year.
Next year I will remember to bring sun screen ...
