Saturday night – really poor night’s sleep – head cold and dry throat coughing wasn’t a great setup for the 4.00 am wakeup!
Shuffle start at 6.00, really didn’t get clear of the roll stop roll stop for 15 minutes.
Knew my day was going to be long when the bike computer had 15 km in the first hour. Didn’t see the high side of 30 kph until the second hour!
Felt like I had a reasonable pace against the wind going to Sorrento, not working myself too hard into the wind with a head cold to contend with. Stopped a couple times to ingest banana, muesli bars etc and wrestle with the team supplied bib nicks at emergency stops.
Made Sorrento at about 11.45, caught the ferry at 12.15 or so, caught a team member going the other way, he stopped for a “Hi” on his way off the ferry.
Good ride across to Geelong, looking forward to a push from the south-westerly down the freeway. Legs felt a little tight but otherwise OK.
Not as much as a help from the tail wind as I’d hoped, but again I felt I had a pretty steady pace, stopped at Werribee for a last stretch (and wrestle the bib nicks again…)
Stated to feel a little tired as we wound on and off Geelong road, but kept rolling OK, could see I wasn’t going to make the bridge – but not by much, the Vollies directed me into the wilds of Footscray as they were just closing the bike lanes on the Westgate. Damn. Something of a pootle to get back to the finish via Docklands, Southgate bike path, just happy to see the finish - as it was being packed up! Put the trike on the trailer at 7.15.
Ride time: about 10hrs 30 minutes
Average speed: right on 20 kph
Max 54 (on one of the long downhills near Leopold, I think)
Overall time: 11hrs 15 minutes
Body: this one’s stuffed, new one already ordered.
are you the trike rider that I was taking video of on Werribee? I was passing on your right and said "Smile mate!"
Yep, I think it was me, although I don't remember the video....A fair bit after Werribee was a "just get me home" blur of course!
I didn't mention in my ride report that I had quite a few people say "Hi" or roll for a while and chat, quite a few also who were around the same pace so we kept passing each other often.
Again, the vollies were fabulous.
If you wear cofidis jersey then its you. Just send your email address or yahoo messenger or msn live and will send your video.
