Bicycle Network: Sponsors and partners
Sponsors and partners
Bupa – Official Health Partner
Bupa is delighted to be the Official Health Partner of Bupa Around the Bay, supporting Australians to lead active lifestyles through cycling. Bupa is a healthcare leader with health cover at our core, but it’s our purpose that makes us different. We want people to live longer, healthier, happier lives – and that doesn’t stop with our three million members.
For close to ten years we have been encouraging people of different shapes, sizes and levels of fitness to improve their health by getting on their bikes. We are particularly proud to support Bicycle Network and Bupa Around the Bay since 2008.
The partnership is a natural fit given Bupa’s longstanding commitment to encouraging active and healthy lifestyles. One of the important facets of Bupa Around the Bay is that it encourages cyclists of varying abilities to train for, and participate in the event, and we hope this increased activity will become a part of their everyday lives. Through our continued support, we want to make a positive, tangible difference and assist in building a healthier future for all.

The Smith Family – Official Charity Partner
The Smith Family is again proud to be the Official Charity Partner of Bupa Around the Bay. We value our relationship with Australia’s largest mass participation bike ride because many of the passionate cyclists who take part are also passionate about our cause.
In 2013, generous riders raised over $1,000,000 to support more than 1,900 disadvantaged Australian children with their education. This year, the fundraising goal is to raise $1,200,000 for the kids.
100% of the funds raised will be directed to the area of greatest need within The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, which gives ongoing assistance to disadvantaged children and young people. If riders can help them develop vital life skills and stay engaged in their education, they’ll give students the best opportunity to break the cycle of disadvantage.
Many people think that a portion of the event entry fee also goes to The Smith Family, but this supports Bicycle Network in improving road conditions for all bike riders. The Smith Family will only benefit if riders take on the fundraising challenge, so we make it easy to gain the support they need.
Participants have their own online fundraising page, automated emails and personal contact at The Smith Family to help with all fundraising needs.
The support of riders really does make a difference to the lives of many young Australians in need. By fundraising, riders are helping disadvantaged kids to fully participate in their education, enabling them to create better futures for themselves.
The City of Melbourne
The City of Melbourne is committed to Melbourne becoming a true cycling city and making the municipality more bicycle friendly through the actions of its Bicycle Plan 2012-16.
The Bicycle Plan is a four-year plan for bicycle infrastructure and programs that will make cycling safer and more accessible for current and future cyclists in Melbourne.
In the first year of its implementation, the City of Melbourne committed $5.6 million to install approximately 15 km of new and upgraded bicycle lanes. Major upgrades included a critical east-west link through the city on La Trobe Street and peak bicycle lanes on Exhibition Street.
In addition to creating a strong arterial bike network, this year’s works look to improve connections between premium and off-road bicycle lanes so that cyclists have a seamless experience when riding around the city. Bike hoops and larger parking facilities close to shopping, entertainment and public venues are another focus for 2013-14 to make it easier for people to make local trips by bike.

Hobsons Bay is a fascinating cycling destination year round. This part of Melbourne’s west is a surprise to many visitors with its maritime history, coastal wetlands and extensive city and bay views. Explore the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail, a sealed and mainly flat shared trail, suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. The 23kms trail passes through large tracts of parkland (including Altona Coastal Park and Cheetham Wetlands), the maritime precinct of Williamstown, and the beach and foreshore areas of Williamstown and Altona.
To help navigate the Coastal Trail, Hobsons Bay City Council has installed a series of trail markers and maps. Based on a nautical theme and constructed from recycled timbers the panels on the markers tell stories of the natural and cultural history of the area.
