20km route on closed roads and 17km of new coastal roads
We’re very excited to announce that for the first time, riders taking part in Around the Bay’s family-friendly 20km option, will be able to enjoy an entire route of closed roads.
In addition to closed roads and lanes for the full 20km route, we’ve also introduced some brand new improvements to this year’s Around the Bay:
- Improved transition through the city with closed roads - All rides starting at Alexandra Gardens will enjoy a smoother passage through the city with closed roads removing traffic interactions and hold-ups
- 17km more of bayside riding - We’ve upgraded the course between Dromana and Mornington to include 17km more of Port Phillip Bay coastline. As an alternative to the previous years’ inland route, Around the Bay riders heading back to Melbourne will now duck-off for more coastal views, following the road up to Mornington. This new section includes a 6.5km lane closure between Safety Beach to Mount Martha, which has never been done before. The change in route benefits riders tackling the 100km Sorrento, 135km, 160km, 210km Sorrento, 210km Anti-clockwise and 250km rides.
- A new 160km route - The introduction of a new 160km ride that takes riders to Rosebud and back. Starting and finishing at Alexandra Gardens, the ride will showcase Melbourne's iconic bay side suburbs as it journeys along Melbourne's favourite cycling route Beach Road and The Esplanade between Safety Beach and Mornington.
