West: WestLink Road and Tunnel

WestLink is a proposal by the State Government to facilitate better freight connections into the Port District. This has the potential to unlock or decimate the bike network in the western suburbs.

Bikes in the mix

September 14 2010 The Melbourne Linking Authority has released the alignment options to connect the Ring Road to the Ports precinct.

The project proposal has stated that a bike path should be included in the scope of the project. This is potentially great news for riders in the west.

The document goes on to say, "There are no expected ancillary or subsidiary activities relating to this project that are known at this stage. Associated road network changes, any access restoration and shared use path provisions are considered to be part of the core project. These works are likely to be largely in
the immediate vicinity of WestLink. It is anticipated that a shared use path will also be provided as part of WestLink.”

Both Brimbank and Maribyrnong Councils have stated in their responses to the proposal that bike links should be included in the project.

With both the Regional Rail Link and now WestLink manouvering in this corridor Bicycle Network Victoria has sought clarification from both project teams to see what can be delivered for the bike riding commmunity.
