The south side route
The south side route is part of the important east west Footscray to Abbotsford route.
We are working to get a bike route built along this alignment.
Our preferred alignment is a two-way path against the kerb on the left. This path would occupy the parking spaces that are currently marked on the road.
The photo looks west from Gertrude Street Nicholson towards Rathdowne and Queensberry Streets.
The grassy area to the south and left is part of the Cartlon Gardens and is managed by the City of Melbourne. The bike route we propose would mean riders were less likely to ride on the parallel path through the area of flower beds around the fountain.
The land under bitumen is managed by the Museum who also have responsibility for the Exhibition Buildings.
Hertiage Victoria have been against formalising a bike route on the bitumen.
The Museum is not part of the Carlton Gardens
There are no bike bans on the Museum land. Indicated in yellow
