West: South Rd

South Rd continues from Monash St at Duke St and proceeds east to Ashley and Barkly Streets into Footscray and beyond to the Footscray Rd path into the CBD

 

Council gives South Rd the premium treatment

3 June 2009 Maribyrnong Council has been busy in recent days applying the tape measure to South Rd, from Duke St to Garden Drive (blueon map below), and placing it on a diet.

Previously two traffic lanes, it now consists of: parking lane, wide bike lane, chevroned buffer zone on the outside of the bike lane and one travel lane. This is a great result for riders and Council are to be congratulated for their efforts. The linemarking is only just dry on 75% and should be completed soon.

This route continues on from Monash St (red on map below) and has the potential to achieve a connection with Barkly St via Ashley St. The section (green on map below) along South Rd between Garden Drive, heading toward and along Ashley St conencting with Barkly St could be achieved by an offroad path along the south side of South Rd and western side of Ashley St where there is ample space to accomodate this.
