Bicycle Network: Metro Routes
Hobart - Battery Point
Riders (and walkers) have long wanted to be able to move around the foreshore on Battery Point. Now it is time to have your say on this important part of Hobart's path network.
9 April 2009. This issue has been running for a long time. There have been a number of attempts to get a shared path for walkers and riders that would allow the public access to the foreshore and avoid the big hill on Sandy Bay Road!
Hobart City Council has put forward three options to solve this long standing gap.
1 A boardwalk
2 A path on top of a rock retaining wall
3 A 'scramble' track that would go underwater each day with the tide.
In our view 3 is not a solution.
The other two options are not quite right. It is possible to put in a good path using a boardwalk or a retaining wall. The problem with the options put forward is that they are narrow (only up to 2m wide) and neither would provide 'universal access'. Lack of universal access doesn't look good for people on bikes, parents pushing prams or wheelchair users.
We say the Council should do it once and right. This means a good quality 3m shared path that can be used by walkers and riders.
Please have your say
