Canberra: 2008 - 2009 Budget

The ACT Government and Minister John Hargreaves with the support of Ministers Andrew Barr and Simon Corbell have responded to Pedal Power ACT requests for a substantial bike budget for 2008 - 2009.

May08 Specific cycling projects in the 2008 - 2009 Budget include Jerrabomberra Wetlands path, which will complete the cycle path around Lake Burley Griffin, on road cycle lanes on Cotter Road and cycle lanes on State Circle.  In addition, cycle lanes will be included as part of roadworks on Tharwa Drive, Athllon Drive and Flemington Road.

The Cotter Road lanes will connect the riding facilities in Weston Creek and the Stromlo Forest Park with Civic and the Parliamentary Triangle.
Pedal Power's Tony Shields said Pedal Power’s cordon count showed a 48% increase in riding into the Civic CBD. 


Other projects in the commitment include:

Jerrabomberra Wetlands Path including signage    $900,000
Cotter Road cycle lanes between Stromlo Forest Park and Adelaide Avenue     $2.3 million
State Circle clockwise cycle lanes    $326,000
Sustainable Transport Initiatives – Cyclepath and Footpath Improvements (we understand half of this amount will be available for cycling including possibly signage)     $638,000
Feasibility Study at Stromlo Forest Park including bike chairlift study     $300,000
Park ‘n’ Ride and Bike’n’Ride facilities at Mawson including 15 bike lockers     $530,000
Bridge handrail improvements on cycle paths     $43,000
Stromlo Forest Park signage    $50,000

The commitment also includes some road upgrades with bicycle facilities.

Tharwa Drive upgrade including cycle facilities    $11 million
Athllon Drive duplication and cycle lanes     $2 million

Flemington Road upgrade including cycle lanes $20 million

Cotter Road pavement improvements between Mount Stromlo and Murrumbidgee River     $2.9 million
