Bicycle Network: Metro Routes
Inner: Lygon St
Lygon St is renowned as a restaurant and entertainment precinct. Only a short distance out of the CBD and near Melbourne University and RMIT, riders are well served in the area by a well bicycle connected network.
Carlton Traders Association oppose more bike parking
Feb 08 On Tuesday 4 March Melbourne City Council Planning Committee will review an application to install 28 bike parking spaces in front of the popular Lygon Court by using 2 or 3 car spaces, extending the kerb and installing 14 bike parking hoops.
For many years Lygon Court has attracted large numbers of patrons to the cinema, bookshops and the many surrounding restaurants in the precinct. The management of Lygon Court first approached Bicycle Network Victoria in 2006 after local cyclists had convinced them that more bike parking was needed.
We agreed that a kerb extension using three car parking spaces directly in front of Lygon Court to accomodate 28 bike parking spaces was the best solution. This was drawn up by our Parking Experts and a joint written submission from traders and Bicycle Network Victoria was sent to Melbourne City Council.
However, the project is under threat. Carlton Business Association president Connie Paglianiti recently stated in a newspaper article when told of the proposal, "More bike parking isn't going to bring more business".
The traders at Lygon Court have written in support of the proposal. They have worked out that two car spaces will, on average, bring 2-3 people to the area. The proposed bike parking concept will allow 28 people to park.
