Bicycle Network: Skill Up
Strictly no lycra!
Tweed Rides are an emerging phenomenon where events are organised to undercut the perception that bike riding is only for racing athletes.
Strictly no lycra!
17 November 2011. Its almost here, the annual Tweed Ride, when Melbourne's long, rich, bike riding heritage is celebrated by a ride back in time.
On Sunday 27 November Melbourne's gracious riders will take their gleaming machines and cruise along the Yarra Trail to South Yarra, decked out in plus-fours, tweed jackets, wicklepickers and day dresses.
Riders will assemble at Federation Square at 11.30 bound for Como House in South Yarra and the annual Paris to Provence French Festival where a shared love of beverages, picnics and other festivities will unite the English and French contingents and assure riders of a most congenial afternoon.
The international Tweed Ride or Tweed Run phenomenon pays homage to the period before lycra-clad riders roamed the roads, when a gentlemen atop a bicycle was more likely to be seen sporting stockings, a waistcoat and a watch fob.
The most appropriately presented bike and rider in a number of categories will compete for prizes from Melbourne Vintage Cycle Club, Treadlie, Smart Alec Chatters and Cycle Style.
