All your Parkiteer questions answered!

What type of lock should i use?

Parkiteer cages offer increased security when parking at the station, however a small number of incidents occur each year. Bicycle Network Victoria recommends these locks as the best security and value for money available. We generally recommend a D-Lock.

Can I access more than one Parkiteer bike cage?

Yes. Your Parkiteer card will allow you access to any cage on the network, metropolitan or regional.

Do I have to be a Bicycle Network Victoria member to use a Parkiteer cage?

No, this is open to anyone.

Do I have to ride a bike? Can I park my scooter/motorbike in there?

Parkiteer bike cages are for bicycles only. A bicycle may have an electric or petrol powered motor attached, provided the motor's maximum power does not exceed 200 watts. For a definition of what constitutes a bicycle, click here.

Do I have to pay anything to use this system?

A $50 bond is required, but should you decide to leave us, that bond is refundable. Should you need a replacement access card, one will be sent to you at a cost of $10.

What if I register as a member but I am not using it as often as I first thought?

We are happy for you to use the cage on the occasions where it suits you.  For some, it's their daily commute.  For others, it's occasional use.

What if I arrive at the Parkiteer cage and discover that I have left my access card at home?

Parkiteer cages incorporate cutting edge technology which can be operated remotely. Listed on the Parkiteer enclosure is a phone number that you can call and identify yourself in order to get the cage unlocked. Only registered members who can adequately identifiy themselves will be given access to a cage.

I'm swiping my card and the door isn't opening!! What do I do??

First, think back and be sure that you have called up and activated your card. Once you are convinced of this fact, try the door again. The door to the cage is very heavy, and the security system that controls the lock will not swing the door open when the card is placed over the card reader. Therefore, please follow these steps:

    • Parkiteer cage door with card reader circledPlace your access card on the card reader next to the door - circled - and hold it for a second. It may not be sufficient to do a quick sweep pass as you might a credit or eftpos card (NOTE: positioning, signage and colour of card reader may vary on your cage).
    • Once you hear the click that the lock has reacted to your card, grab the door handle and pull.
    • Please close the door after you, and ensure that it does not remain open for longer than 60 seconds.
    • When leaving, there is no need to use your card as the handle operates from the inside. Again, ensure the door closes behind you.

If it is your first time you have accessed your cage, or you are using a cage other than the one you registered for, sometimes there may be a delay.  Try again in a few minutes time.

How do I get a refund of my $50 bond?

See ourrefund page for more information.

Why should I become a Parkiteer instead of just locking my bike to the fence?

Employing world class security systems, Parkiteer bike cages ensure that your bike remains secure while you are out and about. The cages also aid in protecting your bike from the elements. The vertical 'Ned Kelly' and horizontal 'Flat top' bicycle rails meet Australian Standard AS2890.3 for bicycle parking and spacing between bikes.  This means your bike is less likely to be damaged through repeated use.  Finally, many members have informed us Parkiteer enclosures offer a potential social network from their local area, where they can share tips and route choices.

How do I get my bike up onto a Ned Kelly TM Bike Rack?

By pulling the bike up against your rear wheel while holding the brake on, it's quite straighforward.  The trick is to use your knee on your saddle.

What if a friend wants to use the cage while I’m not using it?

The Parkiteer system is only for the registered members' use. No responsibility will be taken for damages or loss caused by a breach of this rule. As there will be stickers to be attached to both your bike and helmet, no responsibility can be taken for confusion by other Parkiteers who may allow someone using your equipment into the facility, and any problems that may cause. It is in your interests not to facilitate entry of non-members otherwise your bike may be at risk.

What does Parkiteer mean?

The name is a play on ‘Park it here', but also infers membership of a group.
