Bicycle Network: Skill Up
Bikes meet architecture
Self guided tours of great buildings
Bikes meet architecture
13 July 2011. Melbourne's great architecture can now be explored by bike, following a new tour guide initiative by the the Australian Institute of Architects, Victorian Chapter.
Mapping the ‘Burbs is a mapping project in inner, outer and regional suburbia where nine architectural firms have designed a cycling tour of significant architectural sites within their neighbourhoods.
These self-guided tours have been reviewed by Bicycle Network Victoria – a partner of this event - and should be comfortable to get around.
The designs of the maps by the nine firms incorporate intimate knowledge to promote architecture in outer metropolitan areas.
The tours aim to engage the community with local architecture in a fun, active way.
The project has a website. Maps for each of the tours are downloadable. Click on the green dots.
The venture is part of the State of Design Festival and sponsored by the City of Yarra and the Office of the Victorian Government Architect.
