Lights test 2011

Light up your ride with the best and brightest lights tested for winter. Ride On magazine presents the findings of the 6th annual Lights Test.

For this year we developed our waterproofness testing to a new level this year and found out some good and some poor performers. A new-comer in the high-powered category took out the top rating and in dynamo lights it was interesting to find that the model built in to a bike took was the best for its overall visibility, convenience and value.

From 20 different brands we collected more than 100 lights available in Australia in the categories of compact, dynamo and high-powered. After a selection process, we tested 50 lights.

Bicycle Network Victoria members can see other lights to consider and view all the scores for each light in the 2011 test – in all categories of compact, high-powered and dynamo lights – by logging into Blink and browsing the Ride On library.

What makes a good light?

• Highly visible output, both head-on and angled, so that people can see you.
• Excellent water resistance.
• Durability for regular use and the occasional tumble.
• Ease of operation and not too many modes to scroll through.
• Ease of mounting and removing
• Convenience in charging or changing the batteries.
• Compact nature so you can take it with you when you’re parked on the street.

Did you know?

• Flashing lights are more visible than steady lights. Steady lights used to see by should be supplemented with flashing lights so that others see you.
• As batteries run down many lights become less visible. Clever lights tell you when the battery is low.
• Bike riders are most effectively seen when their lights are at handlebar height for front and rear lights.
• We don’t recommend helmet-mounted lights because they dazzle other riders.
• Beware of high-powered lights blinding other riders and road users; there’s a fine line between a strong light and being anti-social.
