Take a self guided bike tour
Port of Melbourne tour by bike
9 November 2010. The Port of Melbourne has introduced a self guided bike tour to show the community what goes on in the various different areas of the port.
Riders can download route instructions from the website which contain information about each section of the port—what they are used for and what is imported or exported through each.
The tour follows the outer edge of the port beginning at Victoria Harbour which is now part of the Docklands precinct.
The tour starts at Southern Cross Station and finishes at Williamstown Station, a distance of 13.6km.
One route involves a trip across the Yarra in the punt, so make sure the punt is operating on that day if you plan to take that route.
Several roads on this bike route (Footscray Rd, Whitehall St, Hyde St and Somerville Rd) are very busy. Care should be taken whenever cycling along them.
