At 65 of Melbourne's train stations you will find one or more of the 571 bike lockers available. These lockers are usually found on the stations platform and are reserved for those who have registered and paid a bond of up to $100.
Whilst these lockers offer security and protection for bikes left at train stations, they only provide this for a fortunate few who are aware of the system.
Federal and State Governments are refurbishing the old bike lockers seen on the platforms of many suburban train stations as well as adding 212 new lockers.
In the past an annual $79 rental fee was associated with bike lockers, however in April this year the rental fee was dropped. It is still necessary to pay a bond of either $50 or $100 depending on whether the locker has a lock or you need to supply your own.
These 212 new lockers will come at a cost of $516,000 ($216,000 federal government and $300,000 state government), whilst Bicycle Network Victoria is happy that the State and Federal governments are investing money in bicycle facilities at train stations we believe this money could used more wisely. This investment is known as the Cycle Connect project.
Bicycle Network Victoria agrees that there is a demand for secure bike parking at train stations, however we think that bike cages are the long-term answer.
