International Car Free Day - 22 September 2010
Spring is here and so is the countdown to the prime cycling season. In preparation for Ride to Work Day, join people around the world by riding, walking, or taking the tram or train to work on September 22.
Sustainability Victoria are organising a commuter challenge in Melbourne, where celebrities on different modes of transport will set off from Southern Cross Station and race across the city to Parliament Station. The action starts at 7.30am at Southern Cross Staion.
Some Car Free Travel facts from Sustainability Victoria:
- Generally saves you money – compare the cost of a train or tram ticket to CBD car parking and petrol.
- Reduces your waistline - public transport users get an average 41 minutes of physical activity as part of their travel; car drivers get only 8 minutes
- Keeps our streets clean - one full tram takes up to 140 cars off the road, and one full metropolitan train can remove as many as 800 cars off the road (see Metlink for more details)
- Is faster! - If you live within 10km of your workplace, car free commuting can be much faster than driving in peak hour
