Bicycle Network: Where to Ride
V/Line and bikes
This section will help you untangle the rules about using your bike on Victoria's regional public transport network.
V/Line runs rail and coach services to regional centres in Victoria.
The rail services are on purple Velocity trains and standard 'red' locomotives and yellow Sprinter services. There is storage space for bikes on all locomotive-hauled services, but on the Sprinter and VLocity trains, this space is limited. V/Line has banned standard bikes on coaches, although you may carry a folding bike.
1 Our Campaign
At the moment it can be very difficult and even sometimes impossible to take your bike on some regional public transport services in Victoria. By working closely with transport agencies, solutions are emerging.
2 Follow the Star to get your bike on a train
Any service with a star (which means there are first class seats) has lots of space for your bike.
3 V/Line trains – regional services in Victoria
Taking your bike on V/Line trains.
4 Coaches - regional services in Victoria
Currently, passengers are not permitted to board a V/Line coach with their bikes. These rules have no justification.
5 What you want
From time to time information on feedback from members, issues of timely interest, and other news about what people want from bikes on V/Line will be published here.
6 Trail Transporter - rail to Ballarat
Storage space is limited on some train services. The Transporter Trial will help work out the best solution to this problem.
7 Trail transporter - coach to Leongatha
Currently people cannot carry standard bicycles on any V/Line coach service. This rule affects casual users and large groups of bike riders alike. To help address this issue, Bicycle Network Victoria is running a bike transport trial on the Melbourne–Leongatha coach service.
