Approximately 18kms in length, this trail runs between Heyington and Blackburn train stations and is one of Melbourne's busiest commuter and recreational paths. Specifically this route starts at the Main Yarra Trail in Toorak, near St Kevin's College (Melway Ref 59 A1), and follows Gardiners Creek through Glen Iris, Malvern, Burwood, Ashwood, Box Hill and ends near the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary (Melway Ref 47 K12).
The Gardiners Creek Trail also combines with several other trails, including the Main Yarra Trail, Koonung Creek Trail and a short section of the Anniversary Trail.
Starting from Heyington train station on the Glen Waverly train line, cross YarraRiver to get to the bike path. The trail starts at GardinersCreekBridge beside St Kevins College. Follow the path and the Citylink is above you. After Glenferrie Road, you will see a outdoor velodrome. You might want to do a few laps for fun here. Keep going and follow the sign, you will reach Solway street soon.
Turn right and cross the bridge is East Malvern station where Scotchmans Creek trail starts here. It runs beside Monash Freeway from the station. You can get to Chadstone shopping centre by this path if you turn right later at Warrigal Road. Further going east of the trail, you actually can get to Syndal Station if you turn left at Blackburn Road.
From Solway street to Burwood Hwy
Go straight until you get to Markham Avenue. Turn left here is the Anniversary Trail which follows the Alamein train line. It is a good bike path for either commuting or recreation. Ride along Markham Avenue and then Victory Bvd. The trail resumes at Warrigal Road. Passing Ashwood Reserve and Gardiners Reserve, you will get to Burwood Hwy.
From Burwood Hwy to Blackburn station
After crossing Burwood hwy, DeakinUniversity is on your right. You will need to cross the road at Station Street where Box Hill golf club is. Ride along the back street and turn right at Riversdale Street. The trail restarts at the end of Riversdale Street. Continue the path and turn right at Albion Road. Go straight until reaching Main Street. Turn left here and ride towards north along Main Street. Finally you get to Blackburn train station on Belgrave and Lilydale train line.
