Bicycle Network: Where to Ride
Ten top transitions to touring
- Abby Lewtas
Making the jump from day rides to weekend rides.
The idea of Transition to Touring rides came about after a survey of members was done by Melbourne Bicycle Touring Club.
Many club members wanted to move up to overnight bike touring but weren’t yet ready to go the whole hog doing long distances carrying lots of camping and cooking gear.
The club started running Transition to Touring rides which were weekend rides of about 50–70km a day. Accommodation was in pubs or youth hostels and dinner was in a local restaurant. This cut down enormously on the amount of gear that had to be carried making touring more accessible.
Here are ten of the club’s popular Transition to Touring Rides.
