Gardiners up the creek again - March 2013 to December 2013

Read more here for the latest information from Melbourne Water

June 2013 Just when rider numbers were climbing to the numbers measured prior to the M1 widening and previous Creek works, Melbourne Water have informed us of iminent closures.
Flood mitigation works on Gardiners Creek
Melbourne Water will soon begin works to widen Gardiners Creek, between Burke Road and Tooronga Road. The project will increase the level of flood protection for local properties and the community in high rainfall events.

The need for the project was identified by an independent investigation following flooding on 4/5 February 2011. At the time, 13 properties were flooded above floor level.

The works to widen the creek are planned to start in mid July and are expected to take 4 to 6 months to complete.
When will the creek widening project begin?
Melbourne Water’s contractor for the creek widening project will begin site preparation works in parallel with Citipower’s works. Once Citipower complete the relocation of electrical infrastructure, we will begin the creek widening works.
The creek widening project is expected to be completed by December 2013.
Likely impacts from upcoming activities
The Gardiners Creek shared path will be closing during the creek widening works and a detour will be put in place. We will be installing illuminated signs along the path two weeks in advance of starting to inform of the exact detour start date.
Project signage has been installed to inform path users of the upcoming project and detour.

Deer Park Bypass Path closure for RRL works

15 April 2013 We have recieved updated information from the project team, as follows:

Updated information available here and map available here.

21 March 2013 As part of the Regional Rail Link project, the Deer Park – West Werribee Junction project team will be undertaking works at Deer Park Bypass. These works briefly comprise:

To perform stage three of the Deer Park Bypass works the current shared user path next to the works area will be reconstructed to make way for a strengthened road over rail bridge structure. To achieve this, the shared user path next to the working area will be replaced over a three to five month period, weather permitting.
The Project have investigated alternative routes with VicRoads and have failed to locate a safe alternative route. All surrounding roads have been assessed as possible detours, but have been deemed unsatisfactory alternative routes for cyclists. Please see map below showing where we are proposing to close the shared user path.
Bike user counts have been completed along the shared user path. The results showed the path is used by a small number of users who are mainly recreational cyclists. The project would like to close the shared user path no later than 2 April 2013 to commence work.

Future planned tree burning closes Mt Dandenong Tourist Road

18 March 2013 The Department of Sustainability and Environment and Parks Victoria, in conjunction with VicRoads, will be closing the Mt Dandenong Tourist Road in Montrose. These closures will occur daily from 9:00am to 3:30pm between:
Monday 18th and Friday 22nd March

The closure is required for important tree works prior to future planned burning within Dandenong Ranges National Park, and is to prevent future blockages of this section of road as a result of planned burning, bushfire or storm events.

No Bicycles will be permitted on the Inverness Road traffic detour for safety reasons. Cyclists should find an alternative route during the period of works.

Click here for the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document outlining the details of the works, road closure and a map of the location.

Hazardous trail section replaced

20 March 2013 A kilometre of new, smooth 3-metre wide concrete trail will replace the notorious cracked bitumen section of the Federation Trail at Laverton North.

Since the initial construction lateral cracks have constantly materialised along the section of the trail from Fitzgerald Road to Leakes Road, creating a hazard for riders.

The original trail design was not appropriate for soil conditions in the area and repeated repairs were needed.

In order to achieve the upgrade the Trail will be fully closed in the section between Fitzgerald Road and Leakes Road over the next four weeks the.

VicRoads have provided no detours, as none are recommended as suitable. The best advice they have provided is for cyclists to avoid that area where possible during this period.

VicRoads is aiming to complete the works sooner than four weeks, but it will be dependent on a few factors, including weather.

We look forward to riding along this upgraded section and expect that the disruption will be worth the inconvenience.

Essential maintenance closes St Georges Road Path

14 March 2013 Next Saturday, 23 March the St Georges Road shared path will be closed for the day.  Essential maintenance and heavy machinery will require full closer of the path.

Where: St Georges Rd shared path from Normanby, Avenue Thornbury to Arthurton Road, Northcote

Fire burns La Trobe Uni bridge

6 March 2013. An arson attack has closed the bridge on the shared path between the Darebin Creek Trail and LaTrobe University.

The bridge suffered serious damage and has been closed until further notice.

The City of Darebin is examining options for re-instating the structure.

Due to the scale of the damage it is possible the bridge will need to be replaced, which could take some time.

The alternative routes are along Clingin Street on the west side and Kylta Road on the east side.

Click here for the alternative route map prepared by City of Darebin.

Walmer Street bridge re-opened

9 January 2012. Emergency repairs to the Walmer Street Bridge on the Main Yarra Trail have been completed in record time and bikes have returned to this vital route.

Support props have been installed under the cracked section of the bridge approach while engineers investigate the appropriate permanent repair to the bridge.

Users will be given prior warning when it is required to close the bridge again when the permanent repair is undertaken.

The City of Boroondara has reported that as the bridge is extensively used by pedestrians and cyclists, it understood its importance to the community, and the bridge engineer and scaffolder acted to get the work completed ahead of schedule.

Great work by the engineers and contractors, assisted by Boroondara's Parks and Gardens and Infrastructure Services staff, and by the timely cooperation from Parks Victoria and City of Yarra staff.

Cracks close Walmer Street Bridge

8 January 2012. The Walmer Street Bridge on the main Yarra Trail has been closed because of cracks in a timber support beam on the bridge approach on the Kew side of the river.

Bridge users noticed the cracks yesterday and reported that the approach structure had subsided noticeably.

The City of Boroondara, which is responsible for the approach bridge, immediately closed it over safety concerns.

The damage is not on the cast iron bridge proper—which was refurbished in 2010-11—but on the laminated wood approach section, thought to be about 30 years old.

The council is planning to install props under the structure as a temporary measure to enable the bridge to be reopened while permanent solutions are worked on.

The bridge is expected to be re-opened to bike traffic in a week or so.

Alternative river crossings are the Gipps Street footbridge, Abbotsford—to the west of Walmer Street, and the Victoria Street bridge, Richmond—to the east of Walmer Street.

Yarra Trail diversion, city end.

Due to the size of the event various parts of Alexandra Gardens and Birrarung Marr will be closed off to public access.

Fencing off the worksite means that the City of Melbourne, as owner of this event, complies with OH&S laws and Worksafe site regulations.

From the 27 February to 1 March there will be manned closures of some sections of the park whilst works are being undertaken. This will impact users of the park, in particular cyclists. Where possible, contractors will attempt to operate between 9am and 4pm to help minimise the disruption.

The event itself will run from Friday 9 March until Monday 12 March

The entire Lower Terrace of Birrarung Marr will be fenced off from Thursday the 1st of March until 11.59pm on Thursday the 8th of March to allow staff to build the site.

The fenced off area will be reinstated from Tuesday the 13th of March to Thursday the 15th of March for the demobilisation of the site. During these periods, it is recommended that cyclists by-pass Birrarung Marr and use an alternative route to and from the CBD.

Bump-out activities to be completed by Friday 16 March.

Carnival to impact Birrarung Marr route

13 December 2011. The Midsumma Carnival in January will hinder access along the Yarra Trail through Birrarung Marr for more than a week.

William St northbound bike lane closed

City West Water will be replacing nearly four kilometres of water mains in William Street and Howard Street – between Flinders Street and Queensberry Street.

Due to the age of the mains, which are over 150 years old, their location in a busy city street and a number of bursts and leaks over
recent years, it has been decided that the pipes require replacement.

Northbound traffic lanes including the bicycle lane will be closed in progressive stages. Detours will be in place around the block via King St.

Water main works are scheduled to start between Bourke Street and Lonsdale Street on 15 August 2011 and take 3 weeks.

Maribyrnong River Trail Closures

18 May 2011. The Maribyrnong River Trail from Brimbank Park into the City remains closed between Brimbank Park and nearly down to the Canning Street Park.

Bicycle Network Victoria have been advised that this portion of the path is on Parks Victoria land and maintained by them. The Ranger in Charge of Maribyrnong Parklands has advised that an insurance claim was made following flood damage in March 2010. Subsequently while that was being processed, the floods of 2011 occurred and a re-assessment was required. Delays have resulted from the large number of insurance claims, and now there is a state-wide approach to the claim.

Given the popularity of the facility, Parks Victoria is keen to reopen the path as soon as possible. In the process of scoping long-term repair solutions, Parks Victoria will consider options for re-alignment or changes to current path construction to improve resilience to flood events.

Edinburgh Gardens detour

23 March 2011. The path through Edinburgh Gardens in Fitzroy has been detoured due the construction of a stormwater harvesting drain.

The detour adds 160 metres each way to the route but shorter alternatives were not suitable because of the risk of dogs off lead.

See map.

The re-constructed and widened path will be worth the wait when it opens in mid-year.

The project will harvest stormwater from the North Fitzroy main stormwater drain, providing a sustainable irrigation source for Edinburgh Gardens’ historic trees. The raingarden will also help to improve the health of the Merri Creek and Yarra River by filtering captured stormwater.

Solway Bridge No way

2011 February 9. The floods of last weekend have destroyed the Solway Bridge despite some $150,000 of strengthening works carried out in 2008 by the City of Stonnington. A new bridge has been planned for some time as part of the Anniversary Trail and Markham Reserve path link to Warrigal Rd underpass BUT is in the budget for 2011/12 financial year - not soon enough! A new bridge of course will have to be on an improved alignment and with lesser gradients.

The detour route from the Anniversary Trail is to be via Ryburne Ave, Solway St, Glen Rd, Winton Rd and then back on the Gardiners Creek Trail either downstream to the City or upstream via the repaired path beside the golf course to the south bank of the Solway Bridge.  SEE MAP

Riding upstream take the reverse of the above route if heading for the Anniversary Trail otherwise continue up to where the Solway Bridge used to be.

For more information, please contact the City of Boroondara on 9278 4444.

Maribyrnong River Works

8 February  2011. Moonee Valley BUG has passsed on this advice:   Works are to be undertaken on the Maribyrnong Trail within the City of Maribyrnong which will commence next Monday 07 February and continue for approximately 1 week, subject to weather conditions. The works are dispersed in a number of locations. Generally pedestrians and cyclists will be directed to dismount, walk around the work zone, and return to the path to continue riding.

The exception to this arrangement is Site 3, on the northern side of the Stockbridge (on the western side of the river) where the southern concrete trail (from Footscray and Williamstown) meets the asphalt pathway leading up to the Stockbridge. Due to the constrained space in this location, the path will be closed for approximately 3 days from Tuesday 8th February, and pedestrians and cyclists are to be diverted via the Stockbridge, the existing shared path on the eastern side of river, Footscray Road shared path, Shepherd's Bridge, Napier Street, Maribyrnong Street to the Maribyrnong Trail. The trail closure will be kept to a minimum and opened up for traffic as soon as possible.

Please contact Stuart Hale, Open Space Coordinator, City of Maribyrnong on 0413-938 905 with any queries.

Wurundjeri Way Works – Pedestrian and bicycle Access

With works well underway on the Melbourne Main Sewer Replacemnt project, the construction of the last vertical access shaft will commence from January 23rd. This shaft is to be established within the median strip of Wurundjeri Way. Whilst the pedestrian and cyclist paths over Charles Grimes Bridge will be closed, pedestrian and cycle path diversions will be put in place, and the aim has been to ensure that vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic in this area remains accessible whilst these essential works are occurring. With this in mind, the MMSR team has implemented detour routes as shown in the December Newsletter at http://melbournemain.melbournewater.com.au/content/library/Newsletters/20110110_December_2010.

Water main pain in Chapel Street

18 March 2010. Sections of the Chapel Street bike lane will be blocked off until October while the 150 year old, large cast iron water main is replaced.

Most of the main is on the east side of the street so city bound commuters will not be seriously effected. By the time of the evening commute work will be shut down for the day.

Works will be conducted in temporary zones of approximately 60 metres at a time. Once pipeline renewal is complete in one zone, works will be moved to the next location down Chapel Street.

Temporary reinstatement of the asphalt surface will take place once a work zone is complete. When a major section of work is complete a crew will reinstate the road surface and re-mark lines and parking bays.

Some works have been scheduled to occur at night to minimise disruption to traffic flows where possible.

There will be period of disruption when bikes will have to share the middle of the road with cars and trams.

The usual care with bike tyres and tram tracks will need to be taken.
