Before and After Evaluations
Looking ahead, we expect to do more evaluation work - investigating a site or a route before an upgrade or change and then going back afterwards to assess the impact of the change.
The impact of an investment in your bicycle network will be noticed by the riders who use the improved route. They will appreciate the reduced stress or notice the increase in use. It is unlikely however that all those involved in the decision or those responsible for considering the next investment will even know the location of the works let alone the change they brought about.
A before and after evaluation brings evidence of the change right to the desk of the decision makers and can also build support for further bicycle investments.
Before and after evaluations can be done by visual counts, intercept surveys (coffee-cart incentive) and internet surveys. In terms of the intercept surveys, riders can be engaged at a specific location or on a particular route.
More and more we expect that bicycle infrastructure investments will be accompanied by before and after evaluations.
