City of Glen Eira Bike Strategy 2010

Glen Eira has begun to develop a new Bicycle Strategy. The City is well set out for bike infrastructure and there is a tremendous opportunity to increase bike use for commuting and local trips.

The Glen Eira Bicycle Strategy 2010 has been adopted

21 September 2010 The Glen Eira Bicycle Strategy 2010 aims to develop infrastructure that promotes and encourages cycling as a safe physical activity for leisure and as a legitimate transport option. This will be achieved through a combination of physical improvements, considerate policy, promotion and prioritising sustainable transport options. The Strategy also addresses the needs of all types of cyclists by providing a range of safe, continuous and connected routes.

Draft Glen Eira Bicycle Strategy – Public Consultation

8 June 2010 The City of Glen Eira has prepared a draft Bicycle Strategy that outlines an action plan to deliver a safe and extensive bicycle network in the municipality. Glen Eira believes it can increase cycling through a combination of physical improvements, considerate policy, promotion and prioritising sustainable transport options.

The Strategy aims to promote and encourage cycling as a safe physical activity for leisure and as a legitimate transport option. At the core are three key directions:

Providing safe, connected and continuous bicycle routes;
Encourage cycling through promotion and education; and
Collaborating with external organisations to improve cycling provision.

Glen Eira is undertaking a public consultation process that aims to inform the community, seek feedback and comment.

11 November 2009 From the Council website:

'Glen Eira City Council is currently preparing a new Bicycle Strategy that will promote cycling across the municipality.

It is an exciting time for cycling in Glen Eira as Council, residents and key stakeholders provide input into a new Strategy that will shape not only the provision of future infrastructure, but the culture of cycling in Glen Eira.

Key objectives of the Strategy include:

The first Glen Eira Strategic Bicycle Plan was completed in 2000. To date, this Plan has been very successful and has become the blue print for Council to develop the on and off road trail network across the municipality.

Cycling is gaining in popularity each year with significant changes in the cycling culture since 2000. More and more people are finding cycling an attractive alternative to those short trips down to their local shop or even to work.

The new Bicycle Strategy will provide an excellent strategic direction for Council in the development of bicycle infrastructure, planning and education for the years ahead.'
