Clearway bike lanes - upgrading
Clearway bike lanes can be upgraded by making them wider and installing green paint at intersections.

Brunswick St, Fitzroy. These clearway bike lanes operate in the peak when kerbside parking is banned. In 2007, more than 400 riders use the lanes in the morning peak. (0700 - 0900). |

The first lane was marked 1.6m out from the kerb to centre of bike lane line, leaving a 2.9m travel lane. The upgrade moved it 40cm leaving a 2m bike lane and a 2.5m travel lane- you can see the old faded lane lines in the picture at left. |

The second upgrade put green paint across the intersections. This is the same intersection as shown above.
During the off peak the riders do not use the alignment with green paint.

During the off peak, when cars are parked kerbside, the riders ride between the parked cars and the centre lane line. The parking bays are marked at 2.3m wide leaving bike riders 2.2 m between the parking bays and the centre lane to ride. At shown, most cars park well within the parking bays and, in fact, parking within the 2.0m of the clearway bike lane, leaving up to 2.5m for bikes to travel in. |
