City of Melbourne BikeScope survey 2009

Riders riding more often

18 September 2009. The data from the 2009 BikeScope has been fully analysed and provided to Council. This report is designed to inform the annual City of Melbourne Bike Account.

Of particular interest from the wide range of data collected this year, is that riders in the City of Melbourne are riding more often.

In 2009, just over 40% of riders are riding 5 days a week or more. This compares with a figure of 35% in 2008. Conversely in 2009, just about 29% of respondents said they were riding 2 days a week or less whereas in 2008 the equivalent figure was just under 36%.

31 August 2009. Congratulations to Ray from Croydon who won the 3G iPhone and to Richard from Rosanna, winner of the $200 Village cinema pass.

11 August 2009. The BikeScope survey for 2009 has now closed - many thanks to all riders who responded. Council will be receiving the report and analysis in the next two weeks.

For the survey this year, we have used a new online locator tool to identify preferred locations for on-street bike parking in the City of Melbourne. This tool can be adapted for use in a variety of ways - for example, to enable riders to identify problems on a particular bike facility (such as potholes or line of sight issues).

An example of the output from this tool is shown here. If you are interested in how your municipality could use this tool, get in touch by phoning Mike Williamson on (03) 8376 8848.

14 July 2009. Melbourne City has opened its annual bike survey to discover the good, bad and beautiful of riding in the municipality.

This research is vital for the analysis and future planning of bike facilities and your responses will be used to in develop a picture of the City of Melbourne riding environment.

Importantly the survey results will form the basis of Melbourne's annual Bike Account—the public report to the community which measures progress on improving the riding environment.

Within the survey you will also have the opportunity to indicate your preferred location(s) for additional bike parking in the City of Melbourne.

Jun 08 Preparation has begun for this year's BikeScope and the Melbourne Bike Account report by the City of Melbourne.

Sep 07 The results are in and we have been collating them to present to council in a comprehensive report.
With just under 2,000 responses, many with detailed feedback, it has been a big job to go through the data and build a clear summary for Council as to what riders opinions are and what they want done by Council to improve the network.

Some very distinct themes were identified. Some were expected but the real value came in the unexpected weight of feedback on particular parts of the network that had not been anticipated. This process demonstrated that BikeScope has quickly and clearly given Melbourne City Council the data and evidence for particular projects to be initiated as part of their capital works program.

If you would like to know more about the MCC BikeScope and how it could help your council,
