Bicycle Network: Measure & Understand
Rider surveys
The best way to find out what riders need in your municipality is to ask them!
There are a number of ways of gathering information on rider attitudes and behaviours.
Popular methods include:
Hands Up! school travel surveys
As part of the Ride2School program schools record how many students walked, rode or were driven to school on a particular morning.
Internet surveys
Internet based surveys are a great way to gather data on self reported rider behaviours and attitudes in your area.
Ride to Work program
The Ride to Work program includes a survey of more than 30 000 riders each year.
Telephone surveys
Telephone surveys are often used by local government to gather feedback from ratepayers and assess performance against benchmarks. They are a useful tool in gathering information about bike riding.
Travel diary
The travel diary system can be used to better understand riding trends.
