Capacity at Intersections

Traditionally, Bike lanes have disapeared as they approach many intersections. City of Yarra recently made an intersection more rideable and still retain a high level of service to other road users.
By studying the traffic flow (refer survey pdf) through this intersection the council was able to identify that the capacity needed for peak hour traffic was far lower than the current design was built for. Riders were not catered for.
3 lanes, in this instance, were shown to be unnecessary to meet drivers’ needs and so a viable case was built to justify a redesign of the intersection which not only serviced riders on this busy commuter route but also comfortably retained the same level of capacity for drivers.
