Mitchell draft Budget 2013/14 available for public comment

As a ratepayer and rider in the Shire of Mitchell now is the time for council to hear from you if you want more funding to improve the Mitchell riding environment. We encourage you to make a submission to council.

Mitchell riders - drafting of council Budget 2013/14 underway

05 March 2013. As you read this Council is preparing its draft 2013/14 Budget. The time to act is now for more bike infrastructure funding!

As a ratepayer and rider now is the time for Council to hear from you if you want more funding to improve the local riding environment.

Bicycle Expenditure Index (BiXE) 2012

15 November 2012. The Shire of Mitchell’s BiXE rating for 2012 is $0.19. This is below the Regional Zone council average for 2012, which is $6.47. This is based upon council spending of $7,000 and population of 35,995.

Relevant bicycle related investment for the 2012/2013 financial year includes but is not necessarily limited to expenditure upon the following projects/programs:
• Off-road recreation trails strategy

Additional spending sourced from external grants and funds may apply – particularly given that Mitchell is a designated growth area – but that is outside the scope of BiXE reporting.

The Shire of Mitchell achieved a five-year BiXE average of $1.94. This is below the Regional Zone council five-year average for 2012, which is $5.95.

Bike Strategy

Mitchell Shire Council is currently undertaking a planning project with 11 other Local Government Authorities and three Alpine Resorts in the Hume region of Victoria to further develop existing and potential significant walking, cycling, mountain bike riding and horse riding tracks and trails in the region. The project is known as the Hume Region Significant Tracks and Trails Strategy.

Mitchell Bicycle User Group

Mar 05. A small band of enthusiastic cyclists have joined forces to form a Bicycle User Group (BUG) in the Mitchell shire. The aims of the group will be to promote cycling throughout the shire through regular organised non-competitive rides and to work with the shire to improve facilities for cyclists and provide a social outlet for cyclists.

Regular organised rides to suit participants of all levels will be held on a monthly basis, rotating throughout the shire to enable as many people as possible to attend. Planned activities will include workshops to teach cyclists road rules and basic bicycle maintenance. Some of the group are already working with the localscouts to help them gain their cycling certificate.

The inaugural meeting was held in January 2005 and the BUG has already run it's first social ride. One of the projects the BUG is interested in is converting the old Kilmore railway line into a rail trail.
