As a ratepayer and rider in the City of Maribyrnong now is the time for council to hear from you if you want more funding to improve the Maribyrnong riding environment. We encourage you to make a submission to council.

Maribyrnong riders - drafting council Budget 2013/14 underway
05 March 2013. As you read this Maribyrnong City Council is preparing its draft 2013/14 Budget. The time to act is now for more bike infrastructure funding!
Last financial year was a very lean year, with council only funding $0.91 per resident on bike related infrastructure. In comparison, surrounding councils spent an average $16.89.
Meanwhile, cycling participation in Maribyrnong is on the increase: On census day in 2011, 972 people rode to work by bicycle. In the 2006 census, this number was 585. (This is a +66.15% change).
Click here to tell your Council to invest in bike infrastructure (E-mail contacts for local Council and Councillors provided) in the 2013/14 Budget, to keep up with the increase in riders in Maribyrnong.

Bicycle Expenditure Index (BiXE) 2012
15 November 2012. The City of Maribyrnong’s BiXE rating for 2012 is $0.91. This is below the Inner Zone council average for 2012, which is $16.89. This is based upon council spending of $67,000 and population of 74,005.
Relevant bicycle related investment for the 2012/2013 financial year includes but is not necessarily limited to expenditure upon the following projects/programs:
• Bicycle plan implementation project
• Promoting school travel planning and bike education in schools
• Restoration of BMX track: Cruikshank Park
Additional spending sourced from external grants and funds may apply, but that is outside the scope of BiXE reporting.
The City of Maribyrnong achieved a five-year BiXE average of $3.61. This is below the Inner Zone council five-year average for 2012, which is $10.81.

VoteBike - Local Council Elections 2012
27 October 2012. Local council elections are being held in Victoria on October 27 2012. Bicycle Network Victoria is once again running VoteBike that allows you to engage with potential candidates on local cycling issues. We will collect statements from candidates about their commitment to cycling in Maribyrnong and publish them on the VoteBike Facebook event page for you to comment on.
Bicycle Network Victoria has identified the following key projects for the City of Maribyrnong that need the support of local councilors:
- West Footscray to Footscray Rd - The sections between West Footscray Station, along Buckley Street and particularly the gap along Napier Street between Nicholson Street and the Maribyrnong River need Councilor support.
- Mitchell St & Rosamond Rd - The intersection at Mitchell Street and Rosamond Road needs to be upgraded. Green surface treatment and advance bike boxes would provide safer riding conditions.
- Defense site - Linking Keilor to Highpoint Precinct with a new river crossing and link through the Defense Site currently under redevelopment.
- Somerville Rd & Williamstown Rd - The intersection at Somerville and Williamstown Roads needs to be upgraded. Green surface treatment and advance bike boxes would provide safer riding conditions.
- Curb out parking in activity centres - Get behind vibrant shopping strips by supporting on street bike parking.
- Ride2School - Continue to provide safe routes to schools foster healthy transport options for kids and reduce peak morning traffic congestion by up to 20%.
- BiXE - Increase council spending on cycling facilities. In 2011 Maribyrnong spent $207,600 giving a BiXE index of $2.85. The average of surrounding councils was $10.16. The City of Maribyrnong achieved a five-year BiXE Average of $4.16.

BiXE 2009: City of Maribyrnong
Maribyrnong City Council has a BiXE 2009 of $3.44. This shows Maribyrnong is below the average BiXE 2009 of $10.66 for councils in this zone and is not even meeting the threshold recommended $5 per resident. Maribyrnong’s 3 year BiXE average is $3.98.
Maribyrnong City Council has opportunities to invest its funds into cycling infrastructure such as:
• Sunshine Rail Path
• Ensuring Footscray Central Activity District plans cater for bike routes and bike parking
• Providing more on road bike lanes on Council-maintained roads, particularly around schools.
Bike Plan launched
Oct 03 Council launched their bike plan on Ride to Work Day on 8 Oct which will provide a strategic framework for developing bicycle facilities over the next 10 years. Unfortunately there is no annual bicycle budget yet that would allow the works in the plan to be completed.
Bicycle Network Victoria's priorities are:
- Completing the Maribyrnong River Trail
- Developing a connection into Footscray along Napier St from the Maribyrnong River Trail and Footscray Rd path
- Building an off-road connection from the Maribyrnong River Trail to Highpoint Shopping Centre
- Investigating and developing an on-road commuter route to connect the western suburbs to the city, such as Sunshine Rd.
Bicycle projects that we consider to be high priority include:
- Sunshine Rd
- Ballarat Rd
- Hampstead Rd
- Raleigh Rd.
