Candidate for Yarra (VIC)
Party: Greens
I live in city/suburb: Yarra
My commitment: The Greens have been behind the push for improved bicycle infrastructure and getting more people onto bikes in our 10 years on Yarra Council. We know that making cycling safer, more efficient and more enjoyable is essential to combat reliance on the private car, reduce congestion and pollution, conserve resources and to improve our health. As one of 3 Greens councillors since 2008, we have driven an ambitious Bicycle Strategy with a matching budget for 5 new on-road and 5 new off-road cycle routes, and commenced the process for our first Copenhagen Lanes. We have improved bicycle parking, insisted on adequate bike parking in new developments, and incorporated bike awareness in other aspects of planning for the city. If re-elected I commit to continuing to make cycling safer for all ages particularly around schools and employment precincts, and improving parking in both public and private spaces. The Greens will examine other ways of physically separating cyclists from cars to encourage new riders. We are keen to maintain Yarra’s position as a top bicycle-using municipality with more residents using bicycles as a cheap, fast, safe and healthy form of transport.
