Candidate for Yarra (VIC)

Party: Greens

I live in city/suburb: Fitzroy

My commitment: For years, I have been an advocate for sustainable transport in the City of Yarra and beyond. I am one of the founding member of Yarra Campaign for Action on Transport and still serve on its admin committee. I am also a member of Council's Public Transport Advocacy Campaign Steering Committee. This important campaign argues against the East-West tollway, an exorbitant road building project that will cost at least $10billion, absorbing a generations' worth of funding that should be spent on public transport and bikes. As a member of the community, I served on the City of Yarra Bicycle Advisory Committee at the time when Yarra's first comprehensive Bicycle Strategy was formulated. This strategy has delivered the best bike funding of any municipality in Victoria and makes Yarra one of the safest and most convenient places to ride a bike anywhere in Australia. This Strategy would not have been adopted were it not for the leadership of my Greens colleagues on Council. While I am proud of the achievements to date, there is further work to do in getting implementation of the Bicycle Strategy, particularly more contentious aspects such as Copenhagen lanes on major routes. If elected I will work hard to achieve these iniatives which are so important for attracting the next generation of cyclists who currently feel that the roads are not safe for them.
