Candidate for Whitehorse (VIC)
Party: Liberal*
I live in city/suburb: Blackburn
My commitment: I have a demonstrated commitment to a rage of cycling strategies and initiatives. I am a recreational rider with all five members of my household having a bike and cycling throughout the year (three members including myself are participating in this year’s Great Victorian Bike Ride). One of my first initiatives on Council was to promote the decade old Mitcham to City Rail Trail. The focus then moved to the Whitehorse Cyclist’s advocacy of the Box Hill to Ringwood Rail Trail. I played a role in establishing Liberal Party support for the project which ultimately saw the project as State Government Policy. As a Councillor I have promoted bicycle safety, Ride to School, Ride to Work (participated each year) and Mayors on bikes. As Deputy Chair of the Metropolitan Transport Forum we have, as a local government group, been actively advocating cycling within our constituent councils and to the other tiers of government. I have also promoted and will continue to promote the work of Dr Jan Garrard of Deakin and her research and experience of the Netherlands where cycling has a truly integrated place in society and as an integrated transport solution. I am most committed to increasing the number of children riding to school. I was active in adding a number of cycling infrastructure projects into the 2012/13 budget and will continue to advocate for projects that separate cyclists from the roads, such as the pipe track, the rail trail and a bicycle link from Springvale Rd along the former Healesville Freeway reservation. (*Liberal indicates long time party membership, my candidacy carries no endorsement.)
