Candidate for Melbourne (VIC)
Party: Independent
I live in city/suburb: North Melbourne
My commitment: This statement is submitted on behalf of the Shanahan Chamberlin for Melbourne team. We commit to the following projects as identified by Bicycle Network Victoria: Northbank viaduct - Fund this elevated cycleway between the Flinders Street and Southern Cross Stations. William Street - Upgrade cycling facilities to service this well used route. Web dock rail path - Link Lorimer St to Webb Bridge. Ride2School - Continue to provide safe routes to schools foster healthy transport options for kids and reduce peak. morning traffic congestion by up to 20%. Curb out parking in activity centres - Get behind vibrant shopping strips by supporting on street bike parking. Shanahan Chamberlin for Melbourne supports full implementation of the Melbourne City Council's Bike Plan. We also support a comprehensive audit of cycling infrastructure in Melbourne to determine its engineering standard, safety issues and to identify further projects. We would particularly seek to identify projects that encourage more people to cycle regularly. We believe that Council's current spending on cyclist facilities relative to its budget has actually decreased in recent years. We support a return to previous funding levels as a minimum. Once the comprehensive audit is completed, we support a review of expenditure but a definite increase in Council's current expenditure. We support increased road space being provided for cyclists. The lead councillor candidate on the Shanahan Chamberlin for Melbourne ticket, Kevin Chamberlin, has a proud history in this area. He was one of the councillors who implemented the initial proposal to close Swanston Street to cars and to create the Bourke Street Mall which at that time was open to cyclists. If elected Shanahan Chamberlin for Melbourne would support council fully considering each project in an open and transparent manner with adequate public consultation. We have identified a number of locations in the City of Melbourne where cycling facilities require an upgrade including: *O'Connell Street, North Melbourne where the vehicle carriage is one-way north and the cycling facilities are used both ways but within that one-way vehicle carriage way; and *inadequate road surfaces that are currently designed for trucks and cars only including Flinders Street and parts of Southbank. Shanahan Chamberlin for Melbourne will request the Council administration to prepare a strategic plan to increase the use of the Bike Share scheme including the following issues: *marketing of the Scheme; *helmets; and *charges.
