Candidate for Whitehorse (VIC)

Party: Independent

I live in city/suburb: Box Hill North

My commitment: My name is Conrad Corry, and I’m running for local council in Elgar Ward within the City of Whitehorse. I’m a big supporter of the positives for the community and the individual that physical activity brings. Bike riding is an excellent example of an affordable and efficient way to stay healthy. It also provides an effective way to travel to work and to the shops and to just get around. I believe local council has an important part to play improving safety conditions for bike riders in the community and in encouraging more people to partake in the activity of not only bike riding, but all safe forms of physical activity. I support the ‘Ride2School’ program, as cultivating a physically active youth is a great way to encourage community involvement and improve the learning outcomes of young people. Children should always be encouraged to partake in safe physical activity as it helps mental and physical development. It also directly teaches them responsibility, safety and a sense of independence. I believe kids and adults alike should be able to ride bicycles in absolute safety. Council should be committed to working towards eliminating all the threats and dangers to cyclists that it possibly can. I am committed to local council working with State Government and community organisations to ensure the safety of all cyclists in the community. Local council should be constantly looking for ways to improve safety around schools and ensure bike-friendly areas are in place that encompass the needs of the cyclists and drivers in the community. I support programs like ‘Active-travel’. Bike riding is an excellent way to balance the need to get to work/school, cut down on pollutant emissions and increase your health outcomes. These sorts of programs should be encouraged and I support all infrastructure initiatives that augment the safety of cyclists and the potential for more physical activity participation within the community. I’m a big believer in the virtues the bicycle offers us individually and the positives the invention brings to the community.
