Candidate for Bayside (VIC)

Party: Independent

I live in city/suburb: Bayside

My commitment: I support cycling as a healthy and sustainable form of transport and recreation, and will continue for argue for better cycling facilities. I say continue because I have already demonstrated that through my support for Ride2Work/School, conversion of parking bays for bikes, new shared bike paths, and managing to reverse a decision so that there is now permanently ‘No Stopping’ early on the weekends along Route 33, including Beach Road. I have also shown my concern for safe cycling (lights, bright clothing) and sharing the road with mutual respect between motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. I want to make it clearer that most of the dedicated "bike paths" in Bayside are SHARED paths where around 20kph is often the max speed. As someone who uses a hybrid to get around – sometimes in a suit to Council meetings – I am trying to get a systematic improvement of that crucial area near the kerb used by cyclists, and often the worst place for potholes etc. Bayside Council is developing an Integrated Transport Strategy focused on sustainability that will encourage bicycle use. This should soon be followed by an update of our Bicycle Strategy. I appreciate Bicycle Network Victoria’s list of projects but I would add a suggestion of mine – Bluff Road north of Bay Road. The outstands further south are very helpful to cyclists (me at least!) and I would like that treatment considered further north. My final decisions will take account of officer recommendations and the input, I hope, of cyclists and Bicycle Network Victoria.
