Candidate for Glen Eira (VIC)

Party: Labor - not endorsed

I live in city/suburb: Elsternwick

My commitment: The City of Glen Eira, in consultation with some residents produced a Bicycle Strategy and adopted it in September 2010. This was to provide Council with a framework to establish cycling in Glen Eira as a viable means of sustainable transport and healthy leisure activity. Recognising that cycling was increasing in popularity, the strategy document outlined both engineering solutions and policy measures to provide a safe and connected, bicycle network that catered for cyclists of all abilities. Many of the initiatives raised by VoteBike 2012 were incorporated into the strategy document but remain unfinished over two years on from inception. My commitment to the cyclists of Glen Eira and the residents who could be encouraged to cycle is to prioritise, cost and complete the initiatives that will genuinely promote cycling as a viable form of transport for people of all abilities. These changes may take time but my vision for the City of Glen Eira is one in which those who choose to cycle feel safe, are connected and have genuine rights to road usage. On a personal note, my 5 year old daughter is super keen on peddling around the busy Elsternwick streets, her tiny bike has the obligatory basket, streamers and spokey dokes! Primary aged children need parental encouragement for this healthy activity but also a supportive local council that provides off-road paths. If we can address the open space and traffic issues in Glen Eira, we will produce a generation of avid cyclists. Written and authorised by Mary Delahunty
