Candidate for Bayside (VIC)

Party: Greens

I live in city/suburb: Brighton

My commitment: I'm a cyclist and am fortunate enough to live in the cycling mecca of Bayside. I'm also the endorsed Greens candidate for Central Ward at the upcoming Bayside council elections. As a party, we’ve always focussed on cyclist’s needs and their safety. Having once come face to face with the undercarriage of a tram, I speak from experience! Bayside’s permanent weekend Beach Road clearway was a win for cyclists and common sense. More pro-cycling decisions should be made, such as increased buffer zones in cycle lanes to reduce ‘Dooring’ incidents which are all too frequent and can cost lives. (Refer also: http://vicmps.greens.org.au/content/greens-introduce-bill-create-penalties-car-door-crashes). Encouraging the people of Bayside to take up cycling, ideally making it a part of their daily lives, is essential. More bike lanes, more lock up storage facilities for bikes at train stations etc., are cost effective ways of ensuring we have a fitter population which is less reliant on carbon, as well as the health care system.
