Candidate for Darebin (VIC)
Party: independent
I live in city/suburb: Thornbury
My commitment: I cycle every day from Thornbury to the city where I work and have been a commuter cyclist for over 20 years. I am running on the issue of climate change at this election and consequently believe that building and facilitating a zero emission transport infrastructure is critical to any meaningful response to climate change and that bikes a key part of this. As a Darebin councilor I will be seeking to significantly improve and expanding bike infrastructure including bike paths, on road lanes and bike parking. I support the specific projects identified by the Bicycle Network for Darebin, particularly linking Darebin Creek Trail directly to the Main Yarra River Trail which I see as the major priority. However I would support a number of other projects including a new trail to Edwards Lake, filling in some of the missing links on the lower Merri trail and improving creek crossings such as at Merri Creek and Moreland road with a new bridge at creek level. Having been hit twice on the St Georges road bike path (with numerous other near misses) by cars crossing the trail at night (despite having good quality lights reflective clothing etc) the St Georges road path requires significant safety upgrades. These would include removal or repositioning of vegetation at crossing points that obscure a driver's view of cycles on the path, installing speed humps that require drivers to reduce their speed significantly at the crossing points and improving lighting. If you are looking for a councilor to champion cycling issues please vote 1 for me at this election.
