Candidate for Boroondara (VIC)
Party: Independent
I live in city/suburb: Surrey Hills
My commitment: I am an independent candidate for Maling Ward in the City of Boroondara. I support increasing Boroondara Council’s bike budget from $600,000 to $1.2 M so that more progress can be made delivering safe cycling infrastructure throughout the City of Boroondara. I am a member of Boroondara BUG and have been working to provide a better network of more bicycle paths and lanes, including a well overdue and sorely needed shared bike and pedestrian trail through Boroondara from Hawthorn to Box Hill. We need to make it safer and easier for children to walk and ride bikes to their schools. I support the Ride2School program to help achieve this. I commit to working with the Victorian government and Boroondara Council to expedite the construction of the Darebin Bridge to connect the Yarra and Darebin Creek trails. This bridge has been approved and there is great demand for it, but progress on it has been stalled for some time. I support increased bike parking in shopping centres, including Maling Road, Union Road and Balwyn Road shopping centres. Improved bike parking is also required at Chatham Railway station. I have also attended and chaired several Combined BUG meetings where Bicycle User Groups across Victoria meet to share information about improving cycling infrastructure. Many Maling Ward residents tell me that they currently don't cycle, or allow their children to cycle, as they don't feel safe on the roads. We need a step change to deliver a safe cycling network that will encourange many more people to cycle.
